Bowen Technique Treatments

A Bowen Treatment will take approximately 45 mins and most of the work can be performed through light clothing. Two or three tratments, at weekly intervals, are often sufficient to achieve lasting relief from even long standing pain, although further treatments may sometimes be required.

To receive maximum benefit it is recommended that other physical therapies are NOT mixed with Bowen, e.g. massage, reflexology, physiotherapy etc.

The practitioner uses thumbs and fingers on precise points on the body to make rolling type moves which aim to disturb the muscles, soft tissue and energy within the body. During treatment there are periods in which the client is left resting to allow the body to absorb the gentle moves that have been performed. This gives the body time to make the subtle and fine adjustments which help to relieve tension, reduce pain and initiate the healing process.

The Bowen Treatment encourages the body to realign itself; there is no manipulation or adjustment of hard tissue and no force is used or needed.

Common presenting problems that respond well to Bowen include back and neck pain, knee problems, sports injuries, sciatica, R.S.I., frozen shoulder, tennis elbow and Asthma and other respiratory conditions. Other conditions, such as chronic fatique, hayfever, headache, kidney problems and problems requiring lymphatic drainage also respond favourably to the Bowen Technique. Some people use Bowen as a means of stress management and health maintenence, seeing their therapist regularly 2 - 4 times a year.

The Bowen Technique addresses many other conditions, it is generally regarded as safe and effective for people of all ages,from babies with colic to the elderly.

WHERE DOES THE BOWEN TECHNIQUE ORIGINATE ?

The Bowen Technique was pioneered by Thomas Ambrose Bowen, born in 1916 in Geelong Australia. After working in miscellaneous labouring jobs as a young man , he developed a great interest in massage and body work and spent time observing football trainers and others involved with sports. By the time he was in his early 40s, this gifted man had established a full time practice in remedial therapy using the technique he had developed.

In 1978, when he was interviewed by a parliamentary committee looking into complementary medicine, he stated, under oath, that he treated about 280 patients per week with the help of an assistant and a receptionist- an incredible 13,000 patients a year, 88% of whom only required two or three treatments ! Mr. Bowen died in the early 1980s but today there are a number of flourishing therapies based on his work.

HAMSTRING AND ACHILLES HEEL INJURY Rugby Referee, early 40s, had injury to his hamstrings and achilles heel tendon which resulted in him not being able to lift his heel without a severe burning sensation down the lower part of his left leg. He was unable to run or referee. After two treatments, the pain and burning sensation had ceased and he took part in Referee Trials, which he got through stating that he had never run as fast before.

ASTHMA 21 year old girl had suffered from severe attacks of Asthma for over seven years, some attacks putting in hostpital about 4 times a year. She wheezed all the time and used her inhaler on a daily basis. I advised a change in diet and she had her first Bowen treatment which addressed her Asthma problem. One week later she had not used her inhaler once. 3 months later, she got married, and even the excitment and sometimes stress of planning her wedding did not bring on an attack or cause her to use her inhaler.

BACK INJURY 49 year old lady had a fall on ice and went flat down on her back. She was in constant agony, with pain in her lower back and shooting down both her legs. When I saw her she had suffered the pain for a couple of months, but it had got so bad thatshe had been off work for two weeks and in bed. She could hardly get on the therapy bed for treatment. She felt very relaxed during the treatment , but was still in pain as she left. That night she experienced a "burning sensation" at the top of both legs which lasted for abour 3 minutes, then fell straight into a deep sleep. Next morning, she got out of bed quite normally, she had been crawling out on previous days, and then realized that the pain had completely gone. She decided to go into work that day, amazing everybody who she worked with. One more treatment was given and then she decided to treat herself to 2 weeks holiday in Portugal the next week.
